World AIDS Day: 'Universal Access and Human Rights'
The World Health Organization established World AIDS Day (WAD) in 1988 and is observed every year on December 1st. WAD provides governments, national AIDS programs, faith organizations, community organizations, and individuals with an opportunity to raise awareness and focus attention on the global AIDS epidemic.
AVAC is co-sponsoring two WAD events in New York City and one in Washington DC:
Tuesday, December 1st
* World AIDS Day Symposium on AIDS Vaccine R&D
AVAC, Global HIV Vaccine Enterprise and IAVI will host a symposium on HIV Vaccine Research and Development at 4:00pm Tuesday evening at the IAVI headquarters.
* HIV Vaccine Research Update Luncheon
If you are located in Washington D.C. come hear from leading HIV vaccine researchers and basic scientists who will provide an update on HIV vaccine research, including the Thai Phase III HIV vaccine study results and other research advances presented at the AIDS Vaccine 2009 meeting.
Wednesday, December 2nd
* Don’t Waste Your WAD (World AIDS Day)
Come to the BBQ Restaurant in Chelsea to get the 411 on new HIV prevention options. This event will be on Wednesday evening at 6:00pm and is targeted toward black gay men and other MSM of color.

* Understanding the Thai Prime-Boost Vaccine Trial Results - AVAC has prepared some brief questions and answers for advocates to explain what the findings published and presented in mid-October add to the data previously presented on September 24th. An expanded version will be available in late November.

This year's AIDS Vaccine Conference—an annual gathering of researchers, funders and advocates to discuss the state of the field, new research discoveries and priorities for the year ahead—was held in Paris.
